environmental custodians
MAPLE Chile and the communities began to plant native trees, create buffer zones and agroforestry plots, and harvest water through infiltration lines and rooftop rain collectors, with the desire to restore quality of soils and water and protect the biodiversity and medicinal plants in remnants of forests and wetlands in their lands. In the hopes to have their own sustainable native tree plant supply, the community-managed school created the first tree-nursery in 2016, and since then, two more community-run nurseries have followed. Together they have founded Budi Anumka (www.budi-anumka.org), an indigenous environmental association, whose mission is to restore Lake Budi’s biodiversity through a community-managed network of tree nurseries and biocultural conservation corridors, jointly by several communities.
